hey guys... this is my first post in forever. Im just getting back in the hobbie of fish keeping and re set up my 55 galon. im going to be doing a cold water native fish species tank. give me some thoughts on the tank and let me know what species you would like to see in it. im thinking a couple green sunfish. I live in san diego so the fish should be able to adapt to the temp of the aquarium :D

Just one green sunfish is enough but you can add some larger chubs or shiners and maybe a stonecat or tadpole madtom

I think a bullhead would also be a nice bottom dweller in your tank. It'll help clean up any food the sunfish may have missed, they'll also eat almost anything.

PS sorry I didn't see it was your 1st post :) Welcome to MFK! With small or medium sized sunfish I would go with Large madtoms as a tank mate, regular Bullheads (Black, Brown, or Yellow) will end eating your sunnies. Shiners or small to medium chubs would also be good tankmates with small to med sized sunnies....good luck and keep us posted on how its going.

But a 55gal is too small for all bullhead species. Some of them may will eat the sunfish and others.

I have two brown bullheads in my 55, they're both about 3". I'd say if you can find them small enough, they should be fine with your sunfish.

The problem with this is that bullheads are fast-growers and will outgrew that tank in short time.

Not sure if you decided yet seeing as how this thread is a month old but if I were you I would do a pumpkinseed and maybe a black crappie with room permitting.
