new 55 gallon need advice

The tank is empty atm and has not been cycled but around fathers day planning on getting it up and running. I have been researching cichlids as a possible way to go with the tank...love the convicts with the breeding and attitudes. Question is what could go into the tank with the convicts? I have 3 younger sons and want them to experience the breeding.
 
i dunno if they can go with cons or not but i just got some apistogramma cacatuoides and they are the coolest fish i have ever owned so i would get some
 
id say most fish will go with cons aslong as they dont mind a bit of action when they come close to the cons when breeding.
 
Silver Dollars are great companions with many types of cichilds. You could always get some of them.
 
Firemouths and dempseys. Both aren't too aggressive, but can hold their own when convicts get territorial during breeding. Also, they are both quite different in color, with firemouths having the bright red underbelly and the JDs their blue-green scales. Hope this helped and good luck with the tank.
 
Silver Dollars grow a decent size and like to move a lot. IMO, a 55 gallon is too small for them.
