Howdy folks! I'm picking up a new 55 tank tomorrow so I can get a JD. I've liked them for a while, but I've never kept Cichlid's before and don't want to overcrowd things. Can a JD live in the tank for its whole life? How much room will I have for other things? If its a 4ft tank could I also get a convict or two? What about a small school of tiger barbs, or something to liven things up too? Ideally I'd like the JD to be a feature fish, with other little things to liven things up

A JD will be fine in a 55g for life. You might be able to get away with a convict and/or some tiger barbs. If you have a male JD I suggest keep him solo or with tiger barbs.
I recently had to remove my male JD from my 150g because I came home yesterday to all of his larger tank mates like a syn, and loisellie in the corner of the tank. He had beaten every other fish up pretty badly in a day. He was a cool fish, and an easy 8-9''.

Good. Maybe I'll skip the convicts and just go JD and some extra fish. Can anyone suggest a schooling fish that might work instead of Tiger Barbs? Giant danios would be too big for a school, wont they? Basically I get to pick the big fish, but my wife will want to pick the little guys so I want to give her some options

I'd highly recommend giant danios, JD's I've kept don't like tigers, but can't really get at danios as they stay at the top and are too fast to catch.

You'd probably get away with a single convict tankmate, if you don't mind the JD chasing it sometimes.

I'd go with...

1 x male JD
1 x male Pink Con
6 x Giant Danios or Tiger Barbs
1 x BNP

With good filtration and regular wc's you'll be fine.

Lol that's pretty much my set-up just now, but I have 6 tigers and 6 danios :) water stays fine at even 20% a week, tho I sometimes do more

Another choice would be rainbowfish.specifically I would try to find Australian rainbowfish.sometimes petsmart has them cheap/for sale.they are fast and dont grow too big

Not many petsmarts around Toronto where I live. But there are other options that I can check out. IT's a big city, I should be able to track down most fishes

Thanks for all the suggestions! We'll see which ones the wife picks.
