Hello all, I recently stumbled upon a standard 55 on Craigslist for a steal so I thought why not try these Malawi I'm always seeing in beautiful show tanks on MFK.

I'd love to stock it as much as I can as ill have a fx5 and am an avid water changer.

As I'm completely new to African cichlids I'd like all the advice you guys can give me!

IMO...
1. keep your pH in the 8's
2. keep your water hard
3. use sand substrate (cichlids love to dig and the sand is safe for them
4. know max size of the species. some get big.
5. most would argue not to mix mbuna with peacocks/haps since mbuna are more agressive but it never hurts to try it out. it depends on the fish's personality. i keep some mbuna with my peacocks right now.
6. ROCK WORK! IME a good network of connecting caves and crevices offers retreat for the subdominants.

anything i missed? i was just rambling off some info from the top of my head.

If Lake Malawi is your preference you should look into the Malawi Eye Biter. I've grown mine out from a runt to a really impressive fish, using a 55g. They have been known to have an aggressive tendencies but I've found under proper conditions and with compatible tank-mates you shouldn't have any issues. Let me know what you think, there should be some pictures of mine below!

I would not keep an eye biter in a 75, I've seen too many tanks with eyeless fish. A Mbuna tank or a peacock tank would be your best bet. Next step would be to decide if you want an all male mix or breeding fish
