So for my birthday/Christmas present I received a 55g tank with the heater lamps filter and all the hookups. For me this is a big upgrade from my 20g tank I've always had. Think it came out decent just wondering if there's anything I should add/take out that you see. I know yesterday I was set on getting jack Dempsey cichlids and a couple other species but now I'm not sure with the larger fish I can fit now haha. Also just wondering how long does it take a heater to start changing water temp? Should I check it and adjust it every 6 hours or so?

You'll only be able to keep up to one 12" fish in that tank full grown. Might work with a pair though. Ifyou want lots of cichlids I suggest going with African cichlids instead.

also you temperature should be between 78 and 82. what kund of filter are you using? i think you should invest in an aquaclear 110. they are nice and would be sufficent for your tank.

I had a 55 and used it for a community tank, barbs,tetras,corys,3 angels, and threw in some fancy guppies so every one who want's can snack on the babies, because 55's are only 12in front to back you can't comfortably use them for big fish but they make great community tanks with small fish.
