I am getting back into fish keeping after a few years away. I use to keep Oscars. I am setting up a new 55 gallon long, with a Tetratec Advantage PF300 filter. I was thinking about getting two Convicts and two Jewel cichlids. Would these fish get along in this size tank? What would you recommend as a house cleaning fish?

Thanks, Mark

Trying to get like 2 breeding pairs? I have only had convicts but they liked to attack everything, from what I understand about jewels they can be the same. Personally I would just go with one breeding pair in a 55. Space would still be a bit tight for the 4 fish, just make sure you have plenty of hiding spots for them. Not sure if you would have much choice for house keepers other than plecos because they will need to be tough.

Not trying to get a breeding pair, if it happens it happens. Just try to put some colorful, smaller sized, and low maintenance cichilds. I know I can't get very large fish for the tank.

This tank is my kids (4 and 6 years old)fist tank. They have asking for a fish tank for a while. I haven't had a tank set up in almost 8 years.

You can keep a lot more than 2 Red Jewels in a 55 gallon tank. They are also tough enough to stand up to a pair of cons...in fact I'd be more worried about the cons even though they get larger. Add a syndonis cat or two for a bottom dweller and you'll have a nice tank.

I've included a few pictures of our 55 gallon Red Jewel breeding tank.

PS. The white african in the top picture was a very temporary resident while the Af tank was cycling...

Get a pair of Salvinis. They're very colorful and the 55g would just be perfect for a pair.

Would a crawfish make in my tank? My I took the kids to mu LFS and they had a few for sale. The kids would really like one. I know that crawfish will be eaten by an oscar, but i think the Jewels and Convicts will be to small to eat it?

We have larger crayfish in with Oscars...Pbass red bay snooks and a huge sulver aro. As long as you give them plenty of places to hide, especially while they moult, then it should be fine.
