if I place my tank thats 48 inches in length on a chest that 38inches in length , causing about a few inches to hang off on both sides will it be okay?
 
I wouldn't risk it. Is the dresser VERY sturdy? Do you have a picture of it that you can post? If you are set on doing it, I would put a piece of 48" by 13" 3/4" ply on top of the dresser for the tank to sit on. I did something similar with an old piano bench once to make it standworthy.

no it's a chest it's the wood used to make it is about 2 inches thick.
 
no...do not do it. even pressure along the entire bottom is crucial. you could however lay a nice thick piece of plywood (3/4 preferably) down on the chest and set it on that as long as the chest is level.

:s I ended up putting it on a bar in my basement, wanted in my room but the floor isn't even for somereason :(
 
i have my 55 if my room the floor isnt even either i just grabbed a stand and shimmed it out i have a 1/2 water lean facing frontward but i think its the best thing ever tp have a tank at the end of my bed...... it also happens to be my only show tank lol
