Picked up my first ever Puffer last Friday, and have been reading everything I can find here on MFK and on TPF. (no luck breaking their registration code, feel stupid. :irked:)

He's currently by himself in a 144g half circle, 59" X 29" X 29", with a Eheim 2260 cannister filter. I've applied Boyd's Vita Vim, and he ate some raw shelled shrimp last night for the first time. Tonight I'll start feeding Seafood Melody and will pick up some clams, mussels, and crab legs asap.

For the time being I've put a large strawberry pot with a few other regular clay pots and rock work while I search for some large interesting wood pieces. The only information I received on this LFS trade in was that he attacked the large Asian Arowana he was put in with at first, and had to be removed immediately.

Long term I'm planning to house him in my 175g Bowfront, 72" L X 30" H X 24" D at the centre bowing back to 18" at the ends. Having read how important depth is to Fahakas I'm wondering if he might be better off in the halfcircle with a 29" depth, or benifit more with the extra 12" of length in the 175g ?

I have Rena air pumps in both my tanks for extra oxygen, could the bubbles be an issue for the Puffer ? One more thing I'm not clear on is the best feeding schedule for a " Fahaka, daily or every second day ?

Will appreciate any suggestions/comments, and hope to take some pictures tonight and post to show off my new found "pet". Plan to keep this guy till the end, his or mine, lol (I'm an old fart).

I would be inclined to say maybe the bowfront of the two would be better; once at the walls at adult size I think he would have a hard time turning. As the width gets progressively smaller in a half circle, but I think a 24 width end to end is ideal if you have something with that possibility

I like him. Really enjoyed the pictures. I have one ordered, so will stare at yours till he arrives.

{fahakha fangirl sqees}.nice fishie..

yuppers..you are gonna need a bigger tank sooner or later. my 2 fahakas are ITRO 3-4 inches so I'm feeding them daily shell on krill, mussels, clams bloodworms, snails( ask at your local fish store..they are easy to breed!)..and the occasional housefly which manages to trap itself under the lid.

fahakas are highly intelligent fish who require some intereasting landscaping in thier tanks..

zapantha, Unfortunately the 144g and 175g are my only options, and I'm leaning towards making the Bow Front his home for life mainly because of it's location in the dinng room/living area. Much more traffic and interesting veiw for the Fahaka. The half Circle is at the end of a Galley kitchen, much less traffic.

rodger, I'm glad you enjoyed my humble pictures, hope you enjoy your Fahaka as much as I'm enjoying mine.

Master of Puffers, Why do you beleive I'll need a bigger tank sooner or later ? With a minimum recommendation of 120g/4x2x2 for Fahakas, my 144g or 175g should be more than adequate ?

It's probably because of the foot print of your tank. Footprint is always the most important. Fahakas can get up to 18 inches. In the half circle he could only make a comfortable turn in the middle area, same with bowfront. You might be ok with the bowfront because not a lot of owners have fahakas over 12 inches

Thank you for your imput John, hopefully the Bowfront will suffice long term, if not I've always wanted a standard foot print 220g. (6'Lx 2'Dx 2.5'H)

It's only been a week of ownership and I'm still learning it's feeding habits. Next challenge will be finding some interesting pieces of wood to give him a more stimulating tank.

Regards, Mark
