Im new to the "monster" end of fishkeeping and want to upgrade to a 75 gallon to get my feet wet. Currently i only own a 30g tank that I have been keeping for several years now. My tank is just running on the standard filter, light, etc that comes with a complete starter tank. I want to take my time on my new 75 and do it right! I would greatly appreciate any suggestions on good quality filters and maybe setup ideas that i can use because im really clueless on a lot of it. Would a sump be a good idea on a tank this small or is it not worth it? I want good quality water and I want to learn how to do it right. I hope this way i can avoid spending money on things that arnt great and ill just want to replace. Im looking to do a sand substrate so any good suggestions on sand would be appreciated and lighting aswell. Thanks and progress will be updated as i go on this project! :)

If your want to save some cash try this idea out. It's fairly cheap it to build a overhead sump like this. It looks ultra ghetto I know but it's cheap and efficient. I made one for my 75 with a bunch of similar stuff I had laying around the house. The most your probably going to spend is on the pump itself. I recommend you go with something that's going to pump 8-10x the actual tank size in an hour.

Id go with the mag 9 or higher. The more flow the better water quality you will have and over all healthier fish too.

its my understanding for a sump you are shooting for 5x turn over. to much flow and the bio filter does not get a chance to process all the water going through it.

But it gets multiple passes with higher flow, so it kinda evens out.

Im running a 210 at 4x and a 120 at 10x and I get nitrates in both. Not that I was aiming for 10, but a pump I had laying around and brute can later that's where I ended up.

I completely forgot about aqua traders. This is a great filter I have one on my 90.
