Hi guys, I just got a new 75g with a fluval 400 pump (nothing fancy). It is a planted tank so I don't want anything that digs too much or will eat the plants too much. I will be sharing this one with a buddy and will help him learn about fish care and stuff.

What are some fish that will not outgrow it, can live in a good sized community (maybe like 15 fish total), not too aggressive towards the others, and are cool and fun to keep. Oh and they have to be not too expensive for if they die?

I have yellow tail barracudas in another 75g and they are really chill. They don't get along with anything smaller than them and are really finicky.

I don't want aggressive cichlids, but small gar that won't outgrow it, or something else cool.

Thanks.

Being that you want durable, inexpensive fish in a planted tank that somwhat limits your options. Here is my 2c, I would get

5 angel fish P. scalare, I prefer the silver/black "wild" coloration but there a numerous color morphs that you can chose from.

a nice squad (12 or so) of small tetras, cardinals/rummynose/neon/lemon

and you could go for 5-6 nice corey cats...pretty much any variety you want, green/spotted/panda.

Then to round it out, find a nice betta to rescue :headbang2

I second on the community. Angles are not my favorite but are peacful form what I have read. Cory cats in numbers are fun to watch. The only other fish to look at would be a gourami and danios. I have 6 giant danios and they dont mess with my pictus or firemouth. And I like they way they look

I vote congo tetras. They might nibble on your plants a bit (at least mine do) but not enough to be destructive. I originally picked mine up basically to act as dithers in my old bichir tank, but after seeing their color in person (especially under a powerglo bulb) and watching them pair off and do the spawning dance I am addicted. Fantastic fish and look great in a planted tank.

A quick pic of mine (my photography skills cannot do these fish justice)...
