Just bought this 75g at Petco's $1/gal sale. Will be setup as a Fancy goldfish tank (my 2yr old daughter was unimpressed by my previous 40b planted tank with neon tetras). I'll have 4 large fancy goldfish when done.
I've gone for a rustic type look with the stand using pine fence boards. I'm going to try to distress and stain the wood a dark grey. Tank will have a frosted white background (using window frosting spray). I've really grown to like the frosted white background vs black, it seems to add more depth to the background and really makes the tank bright. What do you think?

I'm not very good either. I don't even have proper saws other than a jigsaw. Home depot was nice enough to cut all the 2x4's to my measurements. The guy spent a good 20 minutes doing all the cuts. The sander makes everything look good even if your cuts suck.

Nice build of the stand and canopy. :D

You were fortunate to have the associate from Home Depot to cut precise measurements for you the Home Depot in my area including Lowes only do rough cuts so I bought a inexpensive mitre saw and loved using it.

I wish I had the wood working skills you do. I'm pretty terrible when it comes to making stuff out of wood. Lol

You should try one day don't underestimate yourself. I thought the same but got up the courage and built my stand for my 180 gallon.

I haven't stained it yet, but I am going do some light sanding and then burn the wood with a propane torch darken it. After that i'll do a light stain. I've already distress the wood a bit by hitting it all over with a piece of metal putting small dents in it.

looking good, Brent. Can't wait to see it finished! By any chance, do you have any pictures of a tank with the frosted background you spoke of? I know the material you're talking about (as I used to work at a THD in the window/flooring dept), and have never even considered using them as a tank background... would love to see a pic if you have one

I dug one up, this is my 40B which is going to be taken down. I had my fill of low tech planted tanks, it was beautiful for about a year then I had a baby and slacked on the maintenance and it went to hell. Its the spray on window frosting. It's held up well to moisture, but doesn't like being scratched. It is easy to fix though because if it does scratch you just do a quick spray and it blends right in. It looks a bit yellow because the water was a bit yellow because of the soil tannins seeping into the tank, but it's bright white with clear water.
