Just got a 75g and trying to plan something centered on CA/SA cichlids. How does this look:

Filtration tbd, maybe 2 ACs or 1 AC & 1 Canister
Black sand, Rocks, Driftwood
No live plants (have those in my other tanks, want to try a tank w/o)

1 Severum, 1 Blue Acara, 1 Uaru (or some combination of large, more peaceful SA cichlids)
3 Silver Dollars
1 m/f pair of Kribensis (:))

I know that mixing cichlids is dubious, but here's my thinking:

Kribs and SA's have somewhat similar water requirements (I think), plus they would be from LFS so probably used to my local water.
I guess mated kribs can be fierce, but I wouldn't think two 4" kribs would do much more than try to chase away a few 8" sa's. On the other hand, I wouldn't think that the more "serene" sa's would care about a few tiny kribs hanging out at the bottom of the tank.

Not sure though, so please feel free to share any comments or suggestions.
Thanks!

Silver dollars tend to like schools, so you may want to consider getting more than 3 (though 3 would probably work if you are worried about overstocking).

I will be upgrading my 55gal CA tank to a 75 or 90gal soon with black sand, flat rocks, driftwood, and a couple of anubias. However I decided to go with a m/f pair of CA cichlids instead of a community. A pair of larger CA cichlids could be worth considering if you are interested in watching the mating cycles and seeing your fish in their most vibrant colors.

My final stocklist for the 90 CA tank will be 2 P. friedrichsthalii, 6 silver dollars, and maybe some type of bottom dweller.

Thanks for the idea. It would be interesting to see some breeding behaviors -- maybe I'll consider something like your plan, but with a pair of Sevs..?

Are there any CA/SA cichlids that will breed in the prescence of other cichlids without it being a bloodbath?
