So when i get back from this deployment I want to set up my 90gal for a breeding project. I used to keep a Discus community setup and in my 20gal a GBR pair that gave me lots of fry.

I want to breed something a larger than the Rams I used to that can use the space in the 90gal. I know convicts are usually the starter standard for most people but i think with my Rams I have enough experience to try something a little harder.

The options I was thinking of are as follows....

GT - Always thought these were beautiful fish.
EBJD - I know a guy with some BGJD already that I could get a hold of to breed with a nice EBJD when I find one. Also, really like the idea that after I grow out the babies I can cull out the ones I don't want and at least make some profit to cover some of the costs of running the project.
Red Texas - Been following the big thread in here and it interests me a lot. Something I'd really like to try.
Flowerhorn - Love the fish but i really don't want to do the whole tank divider between the two fish till they are ready to spawn and all. Want two parents that can for the most part do it together. Want to try it that way first anyways.

What does everyone here think of those options? Also really open to any suggestions anyone has of fish I've overlooked.

Thanks!

Eric.

you have many options with the 90.you can try freddies,nics,salvinis,carpinitis,and more.will it depend on what you have available near you? or you can get small fish shipped easily then grow out to get the pair

To answer that, you must first define your clear objectives, if it for profit, for a challenge, low maintenance breeding, what have you?

Not for profit thats for sure lol. I know I'm never going to make money doing it on this small scale. I don't want anything real easy either. Ram's have to be up there with Convicts. They pair up so easy and just go at it! I might still do some Ram's in my 20gal for fun. Love those little guys. For the 90gal im just looking for something easy to get around me and that a pair will fill out my 90gal and not make it look empty. I don't want to go out of my way to order some since I'll be moving back to MN in a little over a year. Also nothing to difficult either as my being successful will make me want to try harder things down the line. Never like the look of the 1 fish in a tank thing. Maybe if I get a bigger tank someday I'd look into a decent flowerhorn to order. If you have any suggestions let me know. It will really come down to what I can find for stock when I get back to El Paso.

Hope this kind of explains what im looking for.

of the top of my head, since 90g is a decent size tank, you would prefer medium size fishes;

1. Uaru (Fernandezyepezi or amphiacanthoides) - both are very peaceful and can be kept as a community
2. EarthEaters - this guys prefer fine sand as substrate as they like sifting sand.
3. Altolamprologus Compressiceps - this guys spawn and lay the eggs inside big shells.

i dont really know whats available around you, but consider the above if they are available to you.
