I recently see these guys for sale in my LFS and after a small amount of research decided to get a little male.

It is a Royal Acara (Aequidens diadema) but I am struggling to find any detailed info on them.

All I can manage to find out is that they are south american and conflicting info on their size. Can anyone shed some light on them?

Outstanding fish in my opinion...they can reach at least 10" (all mine did), are relatively peaceful and are good eaters. Standard care was 78 degrees, water around 7.0 ph (though I'm confident they can handle a range of ph), weekly 25% water changes, varied diet, and they took care of the rest! It's difficult telling male from female at a glance, if not impossible, but at similar ages the males are larger.

As nice looking as they are, they get even better looking with age. I see a harlequin in the photo...I haven't seen diadema bother any fish it couldn't eat, so a school of tetras is possible as long as they aren't too small. The diademas have a pretty fast growth rate too.

Thanks for the response, I am very surprised there is such little input from others and info on the net!?

He is very nice, even at this size so look forward to adult colours. The harlequins were dither fish once upon a time and I havent bothered to get them out yet but they wont be in there long term. I do have I shoal of lemon tetra that I plan to keep, so fingers crossed on the not bothering little fish front!

He is an absolute animal, he ate 3 shrimp that were half his size and was still looking for more, I have probably never owned a fish that eats that much!!
