New Addition the SA Family

My Jack dempsey recently passed leaving only my Red spotted Severum and Threadfin Accara in the tank so thought another SA Cichlid would be a good addition. Say hello to my new Turqoise Severum! Any one think they could identify Male or Female?

It’s likely a male but it is not a turquoise severum, a common name typically associated with Heros appendiculatus. Pet stores give any blue colored Heros that name but it’s basically meaningless. This fish would be considered a “green“ in the hobby, H. efasciatus.

That’s because Heros are highly variable, and also because most of the ones that are being mass-produced in fish farms are hybrids of multiple types of Heros, just as a lot of acaras are.
