I had the opportunity to go to one of the larger fish stores (1 hour drive) and found a few fish that caught my eye. Currently have a juvenile male festae, a female flowerhorn, and 2 oscars. One of the fish I picked up today was a chocolate cichlid. He seems to be the most docile at 2.5 inches (may rehouse in my 55 for the time being. The other 2 are a complete mystery to me.

Anybody have an idea what the fish in the pic could be? They were labeled barred Midas, but the guys at the store didn't think the body was shaped right

Actually it appears these might be this Amarillo variety (I am noticing some light yellow in the checks and a faint orange/peach in the tail). A website says these only get around 6 inches or so... sounds like my festae will straight up murder them eventually.

It's nearly impossible to distinguish alot of Amphilophus sp apart by appearance, unless you know the catch location most call them midevils.
Amphilophus amarillo are very closely related to citrinellus, temperament and max size are both about the same 12 to 15 inch for a male.

Well been a few weeks and these new fish are starting to show more color. The smaller one I noticed last night had dark bars on a yellowish fan base. Both are starting to get hits of yellow and orange in their cheeks. If I got an updated photo would it be possible to narrow them down?

Looks barred Midas to me and not Amarillo - search for barred midas vs. amarillo and you will see young and old pics of both of my species. Either way, if male, both will get much bigger than eight inches and will be more likely to pick on the festae than the other way around

If they end up being those darker colored barred midas that would be wonderful, though I think they may be hybridized a bit. The one that is larger has a very strange body shape.
