Finally found the Longnose I was looking for! I bought one last weekend and put him in a 10G full of convict fry that I set up just for this reason when the season came around for Longnose to hit the market up here. I wanted 2 but only had the spare cash for one so I went back today and bought a second. Huge difference in the one I've had for a week and the one that had to sit in the store, he's an inch longer and much thicker. Just goes to show you what good water quality and proper YOY gar feeding will do. Funny part was when I bought the one last week the guy who works at this store worked at another local LFS that went out of business. First he tells me his "secret food" for baby gar which was black molly fry. "they love'em" he says then he tells me that gar are slow growers :grinno: So I tell him my year old Longnose is pushing 15" and he looks at me like I'm lying! gee I wonder why that LFS went out of business. Anyways here is a short vid and a few pics of my new Longnose gar and the pissed off convict pair that I took 2 week old fry from. Its kinda funny when I take the fry out because the female always beats the snot out of the male as if she's telling him "nice job LOSER you just let that hand with the tube kidnap the kids again!"

Just a little update here the gars are putting on size nicely. They already moved up to small shiners and fatheads partial because they went through 500+ convict fry in a little over 2 weeks. The bigger guy has put on at minimum 3/4" a week the other is not far behind. At this rate they will move up to the 55G in another month. The key as always is make food available 24/7 and keep the water CLEAN! I'm doing a 50% PWC every other day and the temps @ 78*, PH is 7.2-7.5 and nitrAtes below 10. ammonia and nitrItes 0. They are going to have to be at least 12" before I drop them in the 600.

cant wait to see them in the 600.

nice find gator

Looks like I'll be moving them much sooner, they are mowing down the shiners and fatheads like there is no tomorrow and it seems like they are growing faster now as well. Shiners and fatheads must be a better food than convicts. The wife isn't going to be happy that I have to set up another qt tank in the basement for more feeders lol.
