Yes, the tail can be as long as the fish.

ya he was a bit smaller when i got him. how long u had yours

Got him on 9-07-10, so a little over three months. Man, he can chew through a piece of zucchini like nothing! I do my best to always have food available for him but I got busy this week with my new externship so it's algae wafers at bedtime for these few days. He's so mean, he waits for the CAE to get within range and then slices him as hard as he can with his pectoral fins. It's pretty comical.
