They sure are bug eyed little things at that age. Gives them a predatory edge from the start. Most other garfishes have smaller eyes that fit their bodies even at that young age. I remember the first time I ever saw a baby alligator gar for sale in an aquarium store. It was in the tank with 2 other miscellaneous fish. The owner of the store obviously didn't know what he had way back in 2001. I asked him how much the baby alligator gar was selling for ,after I had already pointed it out to him in the tank. He said ,"That's not a gar. It's a Lima Shovelnose Catfish. I ordered a small 3-4" Alligator Gar and they must have been sold out of the gars, because they sent me that Lima Shovelnose Catfish instead of the gar." I kinda laughed at him and told the guy that I'd bet my vehicle that it was a baby Alligator Gar. He still insisted on the fish being a Shovelnose Catfish. So I asked him ," Well, where are the whiskers and its mid body dorsal fin?" He then proceeded to tell me that it must have been picked on and lost its whiskers and had its dorsal fin bitten off before he got it. I got him to feed it, as it was skin and bones. I told him I'd buy some goldfish if he'd feed it. He said shovelnose catfish ate off the bottom and it had been eating shrimp pellets great. Long story short, would not eat pellets off the ground. Would eat goldfish. Still to this day, it's a no whiskered shovelnose catfish. It still makes me mad thinking about it. I had no tank to rescue the fish, so unless someone with some brains bought it, it was starved to death in a tank in Conyers, Georgia. Just about 15 miles east of Atlanta. Store is and has been, out of business for a long time now. Nice store to have an idiot for an owner. Sorry for rambling. I really like your gar. Keep a lid on the tank, and good luck. Your fish that looks like a gar ,May actually be a shovelnose catfish. Lol!!! They like shrimp pellets, alot

I agree keep a good lid. I was growing out a beautiful Specimen 2" to 20" in 9 months fat and colorful. He jumped out one night and we never found him in time :( tank was 80% covered. He jumped through an opening where our overflows came up over the side.
