So I have recently been doing research on caring for discus as I have wanted to keep these beautiful fish. So I went to the discus expert forum over at SimplyDiscus to get some advice. Made mention I keep SA cichlids and I know a bit about general fish care.....they lost their freakin' minds! Tearing me apart for that simple comment. It just makes me appreciate how mellow everyone here seems to be. My first post there gets people telling me to stay out of discus care while I am 500+ posts deep here and haven't had any nasty encounters like that. So I just wanted to say I love you guys! And gals! LOL

I started talking about keeping discus in a planted tank. They all recommended that I do a bare bottom tank because its easier to maintain parameters and clean, but I said I didn't want a bare bottom tank. Of course all the people over there giving advice seem to have been in the hobby a long time, so their opinions carry weight, but they all seem to do the same thing and think anything outside of what they are use to is awful. From my perspective, they seem to be more interested in growing massive discus than anything else.

One of the guys early on told me that my idea of keeping them in a planted tank would not work, that I should just stick to my cichlids and leave the discus care to the experts. Told me I was going to stunt my discus (they only reach 5-6" in the wild normally) and that was a terrible thing to do to any quality discus (I had said I was going to purchase from Hans). I was in shock really. I have never had someone get so aggressive with me in a place where you are suppose to be able to ask for advice.

After that, I sent a message to Hans. I figure if anyone will give me a straight answer as to if my idea will work, it's the guy who houses hundreds of them at a time. It will probably take a while to hear back, but should be worth the wait. :)

But yeah, the people here seem a lot more mellow. Not that anyone hasn't disagreed with me, but I don't recall anyone telling me to get out of the hobby because we didn't see eye to eye.

wow man that sucks! people here are pretty cool for the most part, anyways its cool to be part of the MFK family :) thats why this is pretty much the only forum i post in

Some of the members at SD not unlike some here are die hard purists and have seen new members come and go while answering the same questions over and over causing them to becoming somewhat jaded over time. Not an excuse but the reality is what it is. By and large it is an excellent site with a great membership and excellent information to offer the Discus hobbyist. Most of what I saw was aimed at 8ftbed. That guy John came out of the blue and I agree came off a little rough. The bottom line is this, if you're going to get small fish it's easier to grow them out in a bare tank. Due to the amount of feedings, cleaning and water changes they will grow bigger faster. Then once they reach the 4-5" mark transfer them to the planted tank, growth will slow and they usually don't reach the 7-9" dinner plate size in a planted display tank but for display purposes the 5-6" range is fine. If you want a planted tank right out of the gate then I agree with what they said, get bigger fish you will be better off in the long run. The one post I didn’t quite get, where the guy asked why so many water changes? Young grow outs need to be feed often and a bare bottom tank allows you to keep the environment cleaner with frequent Wcs and vacuuming to keep nitrates low, this prevents stunting at a critical stage of development which is much more difficult in a display tank.

For what it’s worth, I thought you handled yourself well in the thread.

That pretty much sums up SD for me.

Whatever you do never ever upset the status quo, or challenge the opinion of certain senior members, even if they attack you and your ideas. For the most part that site is a joke, full of jokers who think that keeping rainbow colored designer fish alive for 3-4 years places them in some kind of elitist category.

BTW - I loved the comment about beef heart, and Jack Wattley. Another common misconception by many of the discus gurus on SD.

Several years ago Jack Wattley stated that a good staple pellet or flake food is more ideal for optimum health.

In the Dec 2006 edition of Tropical Fish Hobbyist magazine, Jack stated:

"I've moved in a new direction regarding the feeding of discus, and after many tests feel that a top quality flake or pellet food formulated especially for discus is perhaps the best direction to take. "

The late Dr. Schmidt-Focke was one of the first to realize health problems when feeding foods such as beef heart, and quit feeding his discus beefheart in favor of a seafood based diet. Dieter Untergasser has also demonstrated the harm beefheart can have on discus and other long lived cichlids. And there are studies that have taken place that demonstrated that when too much protein is fed to a juvenile discus it can have the opposite effect, as it requires energy to excrete the excess amino acids (protein), which is energy that could have been used for growth.

Some of the members on SD are very experienced, and very knowledgeable about raising healthy, long-lived fish. Unfortunately they do not post nearly as often as they did in years past. Some do not post at all.

I agree that beefheart is completly unnecessary. I use freeze dried Blood and blackworms whole or crushed up and feed to small fish and NLS is staple pellet my fish are fed. My fish never see beefhart or any other terestrial meat. Let's face it there are elitest where ever you go............and don't embrace change easly.

Nice to hear! I too, have been to other forums, and veteran members seem to be a lot more "exclusive.
Yep and some just plain old downright cocky.I see it on a few other non fish related forums that I'm a member on.
