Hello I am a new member to the site and need some of your expert advice in a problem that is currently plaguing my young silver arowana. I have had him for about a month and a half, he still had his yolk sack attached. He was taking krill even at this stage in life. He continued to eat very well and grew rapidly in this time. He has more than doubled his siblings size and already has a beautiful silver head. He is currently in a 20 gal long community planted tank, with a 155 gal bow front on the way.Now here is where the problem comes in. Last week I was out of town for one night and the better part of the next day,( my water changing day, ) so my maintainence was a day off. Trouble started the following morning. I get up and see my aro swimming very erratically and what looked like a siezure. I did a 50% water change fast. I let my change water age with air pumping through for 4 days and then preped an emergency bucket for a 25% change in case it would be necessary. As stated earlier, my aro would take a violent fit and nearly bend himself in half, and im not talking his natural serpentine bend, I mean an Exorcist bend and then swim like a bezerker. I checked water quality and no nitrites were found, amonia was in check as well. My ph was around 7.2. I netted him and kept him safe from hitting anything and he immediatly calmed down. So the next morning I did the 25% water change to be on the safe side, added 1.5 tbls of salt and continued to monitor him. His swimming improved so I took him out of the net and fed him. He ate one little piece when he used to eat 5 to6 pieces of broken krill. Now after a week he is not swimming very much at all, eats very little, and worse yet he has a bend right behind his head ( side to side ) that hasnt gone away. What do ya'll think is wrong with him and is it possible to save what was sure to be a beautiful silver aro. Sorry this was so long, just wanted to give complete story.

only thing i could think is that maybe your heater or something started releasing electricity into the water and freaked him out and he swam into the glass too hard!

dunno though never had arows!

hope he get well soon

I hope your baby will be alright.. i am surprised that he ate so much with the yolk sack still attached.. sometimes if the yolk sack gets broken he could get an infection.. you should post this in the arrow section as well.. alot of arow experts can help you.

thank you for your help. Is there a way to send what I have already typed directly to the aro page, or do I have to type all that over? My typing skills stink.

I'll move it for you.

It sounds like you're doing all that you can. just keep the tank clean and make sure no tank mates are stressing him Arowanas are difficult to understand sometimes. I've had some do some crazy stuff and just snap out of it. I have found that melafix seems to calm them down a bit. It's an observation I have made with my 2 current Arowanas, but I've never heard anyone else say the same.

I really do thank you for your help. I was just feeding him and his appitite is improving. He ate 3 pieces.
