Knee deep in fish
I just got my first aor,a silver, hes about 7in and looks awsome hes really red.His fins are a little chewed but not too bad.I was wondering how much to feed and how fast these guys grow.He is in a 55gal now but i have other larger tanks for him in the future. Also do they they like still water or some current.

When small you could feed 3 small meals every day, but once they get large (ie 15"+) one meal a day or every other day is best. They are known to grow 2" every month until they reach 20-24" then they slow down dramatically. Still waters are best, if you want large barbels keep him in a tank where the surface never breaks, like no airstones or hang on back filters. You need plants for oxygen though if you do this.

you sure he "loves" it or can't avoid it? because silvers come from still waters and I pretty much go from that and guess they like still waters :/

ummmm, pics? I would love to see that little guy :)

He can definitely avoid it. There's more than plenty of space he can move to out of the current but chooses to swim in place against it. I must have a :screwy: aro lol.

With most silvers if they are strong enough to swim perpindicular though the current and they don't avoid it, then the current is fine. A more realistic average growth rate in 1-1.5" per month. They can have spurts that will last a month or two. Once they hit 24-25" the growth wil slow dramatically to less then 3" per year.

The growth rate of you silver will have alot to do with water quality, tank size, the quality of food and how much it is fed.

I fill my tank up with a hose during water changes, and my arow enjoys swimming straight into the water jet

Silver aros are stong swimmers and can easily swim into a strong(by aquarium standards) current. Where the problem occurs is when the current hits the silver body from the side. If the silver can't easily swim through it, then reduce the current until the aro is bigger.

The only silvers I've ever seen have trouble with current are under 6" long.
