New baby bass!

Hey guys I just picked up 2 baby cichla ocellaris they are about 2" TL. They are in my 5.5gal qt tank, an already are eating bloodworms! I have a couple questions one being how come they sometimes have a black bar down the side that comes an goes? Is there a way to sex them? Are they okay in a semi low tech planted tank? Thanks.

The bar an black spots disappear when stressed or scared its normal.. And yes where are the pics ?! Lol

stressed...whats the water temp?
Is the water airated?
HOw is the filtration?
And what about your wc schedule?

Temp should be t 87 and highly airated. And extremely clean water.

The filtration is a 20 or 30gal HOB, water is good, is change water 50% a week, an it has a nice air stone.

There super fun to feed, what else besides bloodworms an pellet should i give them? They are not on pellets yet by the way.
