Well I just bought a baby redtail catfish for my 180 hes about 4 inches and VERY fast. I don't really have future plans so I'm going to sell/trade him in for another small one once he gets to big for the tank. I'm planning on getting the RTCxTSN that he was with at the store this weekend... I would have gotten it yesterday to but I didnt have the cash on me.

Are you trying to get crucified on here? You're going to get so many nasty comments for your "plan," which to be honest does seem pretty damn irresponsible...

I have someone who will buy him for sure or trade with me for sure. I don't understand where this is irresponsible? I'm raising a couple fish until they reach a size thats not compatible with my tank, I'm raising them to gain expeirience as a predatory fish keeper. I'm not understanding you here on why this is "irrespnsible". Please explain why you think this is so.

Well it would be irresponsible if you didn't have someone who you know for certain will take them because you'll probably only get about a year to a year and a half with them before they'll outgrow your tank. In terms of getting predatory experience I suppose they're a good choice because they're so easy to care for. And maybe this conversation will save you from a slew of nasty comments since you explained that you actually do have a definite future plan for them. If you've looked around, which I'm sure you have, you've probably seen that there are a lot of people who have bought RTC, TSN, or RTC x TSN and then have had to trade them in to the LFS or something because they got too big. Those people drive me crazy because they should have known better...it's not hard to research your fish before you buy them you know? Anyway, enjoy your fish.

Yeah man I was confused with what you said before but I totally know what you mean. I know the LFS owners/staff personally and I made sure they would be open to take him back in exchange for another small one once he out grew my tank. They have 3 900 gallon tanks in the basement for there big fish. I'm glad I asked them because they said they'll take anything I can grow out for a trade because it makes them huge money. I plan on growing anything I can get my hands on now that I know these fish will have good homes.

Sounds like a good plan, you're making your LFS more money and your learning from a predatory fish. :)

But I'm not sure how your going to 'gain experience as a predatory fish keeper'

But you will learn that they grow fast and have a monster appetite. Also, feeding them can become quite costly over time.

I sure wouldn't want to spend all that money feeding it just to get rid of it later.

Nice! I wish I had a LFS with huge tanks like that! It'd be pretty fun to grow out baby monsters and not have to worry about where I was going to put them in the future. :)

Yeah I just realized yesterday because those tanks are in the basement! So now I can grow out just about any monster and have a great experience with them... I don't really mind paying money to feed them since I love them so much and I'm glad I now have something constructive to do with my time/money unlike a lot of other teens in my area. I work and just about every dollar I make goes to my fish(:

Does anyone have any ideas on what future monster I should try and grow out? I want to try a gigas and I even asked them about it yesterday but I would spend $250 plus if I didn't think I could house it for at least a year.
