He's just a little 2" baby. Picked him up from the lfs for 7 bucks. They told us he wasn't eatting much because the 2 fish (I think they were gourami) he was with for a month ate all the food before he got any. I guess moving the other fish or this guy was too complicated? Any who, he's our first bichir and he seems to be doing just fine.

He is grey in person, the lighting just throughs it off

cute but skinny!
get that baby eating and fatten him up.

Yep, he's eatting blood worms 3 times a day. Steals a few flakes from the panda Cory/Betta too. I cut up some krill and tried that. The pandas and ghost catfish love it but he spits it out. Won't be long until he's big enough to eat all his tank mates/ needs to be relocated to the 60 gallon. I don't know anything about these guys. Grows to a foot? What's the growth rate on them? And should he be ok with a silver arow and teacup stingray once he's full grown? Lfs employee told me not to buy another one, they are too aggressive and will kill eachother. I'm guessing she's wrong?

I think they are agressive towards one another once matured dont take my word for it but i might be mixing them up with other fish lol.

No mean to hijack your thread or anything, but will they eat sinking pellets? I just got one today too around the same size as yours, and im trying to figure out what to feed him.

I've never seen senegals act overly aggressive. Usually an occasional nip with no damage. They do quite well in groups. Ornates IME can be a bit nasty, but it seems to be individually based.
I've never had problems getting them on pellets, but when small I'll usually use bloodlworms, then move up to frozen mysis, then start on pellets and frozen shrimp. When they get big wnough they get smelt, tadpoles, frogs, and even the occasional mouse for the larger species. But pellets should be a staple along with some good frozen foods.

okay well i have frozen bloodworms, shrimp, and beefheart, then I have freezedried krill, shrimp pellets, hikari bio gold, and super color cichlid pellets.

Baby bichirs can be fed massivoe that is smashed up, or if it's too much trouble to smash up pellets, use Hikari Lionhead, a small sinking pellet. It's marketed for goldfish, but it has a lot of protein which is good for the baby bichirs and its a small pellet that's easy for them to eat.

You really have to be careful with substrate though when feeding sinking pellets.
