ok so i went to petco yesterday and they had one little banjo left in a tank. i had never seen them at this store before so i jumped when i saw one left who had buried himself under the gravel. but i didnt really know much about these guys other than their general size. so from what ive been reading it seems like their care is pretty similar to that of pictus they are just more shy? their mouths are smaller though so are they able to eat the shrimp pellets like i feed my pictus? i got a couple new pictus as well and they are together in a grow out tank right now and i am still feeding them flakes since i dont think they are big enough for the pellets yet but will the banjo eventually get big enough for them? seems like they get to the same general size and i also read that they like to be kept in groups? will he be ok by himself, like will he be out going enough by himself to get food once in my larger tank?

My banjo is about 2 inches and he eats some of the smaller broken pellets. (I use Wardley shrimp pellets) He may be small but hes still a catfish and can stretch his mouth out pretty huge when he needs to.

how do ur pictus cats interact with eachother?? i have one now and want to get 2 more.
pictus actually prefer to be in schools, so yeah i think your pictus would really like it if you got him a few friends (have three or more and you will be fine but just two tend to fight or not interact at all)

and thanks thalan, yeah those are the same pellets i use, but yeah i was just looking at his mouth and it looked alot smaller in comparison to the size of the pictus' mouths so just thought i would ask, as i dont think i have seen him eat yet and he pretty much just buries himself in the sand, even with the lights out. do you think he would come out more if he had friends or are these guys just shy?

I've kept several banjo catfish. They all stay buried during the day but if youre lucky at night you can catch them swimming around. I would just be careful and make sure that your banjo is eating. Only because i know how quickly pictus can scoop up the food. Also, in my experience they are relatively slow growers. so it may be awhile before you see the adult size growth on these guys. But fun catfish, one of my favorites. Would love to breed them one day.

You gotta feed it when its dark. Its way too shy/reclusive to be out front and eating. You may even be lucky if you see it, they hide alot. Its possible though it can be trained to eat in front of you.

yeah i turned off the lights yesterday and then just turned on a dim light and fed the tank and i saw him eat some of the flakes, though he only ate the ones that came right to him and didnt swim after them but at least i know he is eating now

I got my banjo a long time ago, i see him every once and a while when i move fish in and out of the tanks. Haven't seen him in a while though, definitely not active fish. I know he likes blood worms and small cut pieces of tilapia.
