My fish has recently started to randomly brush the side of their head and bodies on the gravel, rocks and heater. I was wondering if this is a behavior that is normal or caused because of something.

It is normal for them to do it every once in a while. If they are doing it often, then you have poor water parameters or they have a parasite such as ich.

Some might do it to impress potential mates, but if this is the case they shouldn't do it too often. Like others said it's more likely that they are irritated by something - poor water or parasites (most likely ich).
