Ugh, Someone got my Daughter a 1/2gallon fish bowl for Christmas. It has some weird stuffed animal around it(the fish bowl represents the animal's belly).

I've never messed with a betta before. What are the suggested feeding and water changing routines? Having been sick the last few days. We have fed him very little, twice in the last 3 to 4 days. I'm yet to change the water(which I plan to do in a little while). I think to saw a recommend 100% water change...is this correct? It seems extreme.

Also does good bacteria grow in the gravel(since there is no oxygen)?

If you're planning to keep it that bowl, I recommend a 100% wc every 2-3days. Just fill a 1 gallon water container with declorinated water, store it in an area about the same temp as the bowl, and use this "aged" water for wc......quick and easy. You need to do wc this big and often since there is poor bb activities in that bowl.

In regards to feeding, 4-6 1mm pellets per day should be plenty

I'm not happy about it but my little girl loves it.

Real father talk, nice. I'd consider buying the tiny Betta bowl heater. I do no filter and 100% water change with water stored in a gallon jug with same heater. With the heat he will be way more active and perhaps she won't lose interest in him too quickly.

I doubt she'll lose interest. She still wants to be involved in my tank for the last few years. But actually I hope she would lose interest so I could upgrade him to 1 of my 5 gallons.

Maybe you can try telling your daughter she can decorate the 5 Gallon however she wants, and explain to her that her fish will be happier in a larger home? Maybe then she'll let you do it?
