New bichir seems slow and dumb?

I recently purchased a lapradei bichir and he seems real slow and looks kinda dumbfounded lol. Are they all like this? Are they blind or something? Any interesting things I should know about bichirs? And do they go up to the surface to breathe? I thought I read something about that somewhere.

they do have poor eyesight and take gulps of air from the waters surface they are a hardy fish and shouldnt be in the company of fish that can fit into their mouthcause they will eat it,..you should use sand substrate in their tank cause they (bichirs) have the tendency to accidentaly swallow small rocks and pebbles because of their poor eyesight..they live for a longtime and the lapradei IMO is probably one of the most interactive type of bichir next to the palmas polli..good luck with yours and enjoy taking care of it...
