i had the same problem and i asked my LFS they told me to bake it in the oven to sanitize it (i did mine at 200 for half an hour) and then soaking in a tub of water for a few days to get water logged. you still have to deal with the tannins making your water look like weak tea but on the up side it adds to the amazonian effect!
I throw it in my pond for awhile then bake it in the sun for days!

Ive never heard the bake it. What if it catches on fire? knowingmy luck that is exctly what would happen.

But for the mean time i ran it under hot water for an hour or so then filled up a tub of water. figure id let it sit in there and change the water each day. Do this for about a week think it might be ready.

When dealing with the tub, be very careful not to get residue from shower mixed up with your tank stuff. Leftover shampoo or soap will be the death of your tank so be sure to clean the tub good.
