I just picked up a beautiful little black belt cichlid. He is about 4" and looks in pretty good condition. I wasn't planning his arrival and he is in a 55 for now. How long will it be ok in that 55 gal? I was thinking close 10 months to a year, but I could be wrong. Also who would be some good tankmates for this fish? I picked him up for $10 dollars from a LFS. I don't know if that was a great deal, but I also picked up a 4-5 inch clown loach for $10. I know the loach was a steal. I was hoping the black belt was a great deal too.

I have a 8" BB and he has some awesome colors. I think it should be ok in a 55 for at least a year then to a 125. As far as tank mates it will take a little playing with. Try a red devil or midas. I know a BB can pack quite a wollop when they get excited so it should be ok. Here is a picture of mine.

That is one beautiful fish. I bet you want to stick your head in the tank and kiss it every once in a while. Seeing your fish makes me excited about mine. I am going to start looking for a used 125. I like red devils, but I may be leaning towards a green terror, jack dempsey, chocolate, nic, or maybe a vieja regani. I already have 2 125's w/ rift lake cichlids, but you cant have too many 125 gallon fish tanks in my opinion. Thank you for sharing your sweet black belt. Does anyone else have any black belts, or any other viejas to share with this thread. I could use some motivation.

Yeah, it seems like a good deal to me. I've never seen one in a shop, so it would probably cost me a lot more than $10 if they ever did get some in. The clown loach definitely is a steal. Thats the price it would cost me for 2 inch ones. Do you have more loaches? They will be much happier in a group.

I have 4 others in my 125 front tank. He makes 5, and he is definitly the biggest in the group. He is fitting in very nice, definitly a great deal.
