Went past an old neighborhood lfs, they had 40+ baby black piranha about .75- 1". couldnt resist, only cost me $10, so I got one. They just look so mean, especially with the elongated body. At the lfs, this guy was chasing everyone around. Anyways, the thing is just sitting in the same spot doing nothing. btw 60gallon, all by itself

  1. do blacks usually sit in one spot or do they swim around?
  2. growth rate first year is 5'' right?
  3. can I get it on hikari carnivore pellets, frozen brine shrimp, live blood worms? starve?
  4. As a treat, can I give him guppies even though he'll be the same size as the guppies? what about rosies for him? hes about .75- 1"
  5. at what age does he start killing?
  6. I know that when he grows up he'll be a grey/black color. Is there anything I can feed him to be a deep dark black?
  7. hardy, any tips?
THIS THING LOOKS SO MEAN!!! It was a toss-up between him and the baby gold piranhas, but the elongated body just makes it look so much meaner.

First off I wish I could stop by a lfs and see something other then reds in there, my jaw would drop and I'd have to buy some :)

But he may just be getting used to the tank, make sure he has cover and not to much light on him as it may be stressing him out without those things. From what I hear from other collectors once he starts to feel comfortable with the tank he will start being more aggressive.

I believe the growth rate is 5-6" the first year and an inch a year after that.
IMO I would hold off on giving him live feeders for a while till he is at least 3" or bigger.

Nice find, I'm jealous :D

blacks- $10:D
golds- $7:D
reds- $4:D

okay, so from what I understand, there are three types of blacks?

  1. black diamond- shiny silver with red eyes
  2. black rhom- pale black/grey with red eyes... which is what I assume I have
  3. xingu black- flat silver with red eyes
is this correct? with the black rhom being the cheapest, next being the xingu black, and the most expensive being the black diamond?

one tip of how to get the little guy onto pellets that worked wonders with my red bellies is soak the pellets in fresh garlic juice. My reds went right for em after they got a sniff of the garlic! Once they are eating the garlic soaked pellets you can go half and half with non garlic pellets and then once they are eating all of them take them off the garlic soaked ones and just throw them in there plain :D

1. sit in one spot. Swim around occasionally.
2. probably 5-6" first year in good conditions, but they slow down a lot after that. After that I wouldn't expect more than 1" a year, even with tons of water changes, current, and a nutritious diet.
3.yes
4. NO ROSIES!!! guppies are ok as long as you are the one breeding them.
5. ummm....as soon as something small enough to be killed gets in his way. They should have teeth at that size.
6. a good nutritious diet, but a dark decor (substrate background, etc) will darken him up nicely.
7. very hardy. No tankmates. Read this: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=306686 and last but not least

:welcome:

we're hear to answer any questions you might have. If you want to see some stunning pics of what well kept rhom can look like, check out jp80911. He's got some monsters.
