Anyone ever brought a ABK home and have it turn almost jet black? Just wondering, because mine did. When I bought it it looked like all the pictures and fish I had ever seen with darker lateral to spine area, and a tan or creamish color underbody.

Post some pics:) I've seen some pretty dark ones before. It's normal as their color can be from a deep dark brown to a dark tan color.

the ABK in my wifes tank i have seen it change its color when i moved it to a new tank.when it was on black tile with realy dark wood it was a deep deep brown.moved him to light tan/redish gravel with the driftwood almost white he turned almost tan he was such a light color.

my abk turns black also, pretty common.

its being stressed, when it blackens it just means the water isn't (exactly) agreeing with your knife's internals. although not immediately serious at all, it would be good for the lifespan of your fish to adjust it accordingly.

Ph=7.6, Ammonia and Nitrite=0ppm, Nitrate=10ppm? Finally came out from hiding during the day today, and got a good look at it. Not so much black, but more like gunmetal grey. Didn't sit still long enough for a pic though.

your ph may be a tad high. ive seen them "bleach out" because of lighter colored surroundings. knifefish are quite finicky when it comes to water quality and conditions. they can really thrive under the right conditions though.
