Hi.
Picked up what was sold to me as a "Wild caught Tiger Shovelnose" today.

It is around 3" at the moment and in a growout with some other baby monsters such as a Giant Snakehead and a Spotted Gar.

Wanted a little conformation on what type of shovelnose it is as I read there are a few types. Cheers.

Here are some pics:

Looks like Jurense or Piraba to me.

looks kinda like a small tig with big eyes...not 100% sure...as it is not a jurunese or a tig as they have beaty little eyes and this one has x-ray specks...the head stucture and tail say to me that it is in the same family as them though....

my offical id would be Brachyplatystoma vaillantii

Definitely one of the larger Brachyplatystoma sp., I would guess B. platynemum.

if you look closer to it the b. platynemum has a tig like small eye and a whiter belly...now if you look at the eye of the Brachyplatystoma vaillantii you will see the eye is larger more like the op's fish and the entire body has a "crome" sheen

I see what you mean about the eyes, but the head shape of the B. vaillantii looks way off to me. The two that I think look the most similar to the OP's fish are the B. platynemum and the Brachyplatystoma rousseauxii, and now that you mention the size of the eyes, I think it is the B. rousseauxii.

To the OP, I hope you have a big enough tank/pond to house this monster:

i have to agree on the B. rousseauxii...i thought the head shape was off aswell, but i couldn't get the rousseauxii to load on my computer, but it worked through you link for some reason...so going off what i could see that was the closest match...

so for the id after being able to see the profile it is B. rousseauxii 100%

it is just a wee lil cat at a meer 6' 2" for its max size...
