Hey dudes n' gals! This is my first post here on this forum, and i need a bit of help. I just picked up 2 beautiful baby channel cats about 2 to 3 days ago. One is albino and the other is of a bluish to greyish color. Amazing animals. They seem to LOVE their new cage (Its a ten gallon for the next 2 weeks, then ill go for a 30 gallon) Its got tons of good stuff for em, their eating well, they arent sick and dont have ick, a bit shy though. My problem, is the water. It will not stay clear! it stays merky! I have done a 25% water change, and it helped VERY little. I'm pretty new with cat fish, and so far they seem to be doing just great! Inact they dont even fight each other, they follow each other around like little friends. If anyone can help me, plz do!

:welcome:

How long has the tank been set up?

sounds like the tank is going through it's cycle. What type of filtration do you have and what are you plans in the near future? I had an albino channel cat grow more than 1" per month. He spurted to 18" in no time.

Wow thanks for the quick responses guys! my tank has been set up for no more than about 3 or 4 days. I have an Aqueon powerfilter 20, 4 stage filtration. I plan to upgrade to a 30 gallon until they out grow it, then a 60, or just go all out for the 150 gallon. I plan to grow these magnificent creatures into some killer monster fish hahaha

If you have friends who have tanks (or a good LFS) get some "sludge" from their filters. It will help the bacteria needed grow in your filter.

It sounds like you have good plans, but unfortunately the channel cat will out grow a 150 in a fairly short amount of time.

well you need to saty up on water changes BIG TIME.
your ammonia is spiking and that is bad. you dont have any bacteria to convert the ammonia yet so until that happens you are going to need to do daily water changes.
i reccomend you skip the 150 and go for a large pond.

they get really really big.

Ah, ok, so if i get some of the nasty crap from inside the filter, i should either throw it in the tank? or the filter itself? also, when i change the cartridge on my filter i should get it a little dirty from the previous filter cartridge? Also, i am pretty aware of how fast they can out grow a 150. I'll most likely end up making a 250 to 300 gallon. If any of you guys have any advice on what kind of filters/chemicals/ anything at all to use, or websites to buy certain things from like cheap tanks etc... please fill me in! It'll help a fellow fish grower out! thanks dudes!

if you arent careful you will end up with channel cats in a state of deth lol

you can throw it in the filter or the tank, either way, the filter will catch it.

Dont clean your filter till your water is clear. It needs to build bacteria to convert ammonia to less toxic compounds.
