I just re-set up a 55 gallon at my parents house with small juvenille cichlids a baby pleco and a 3-4 inch blue dragonfish.
I got 2 albino convicts, 2 long-finned german rams, 2 golden rams, 2 firemouths and a parrot.....plus the pleco and dragonfish.
When I checked on the tank today the dragonfish had some serious chunks out of his fins. Can this guy recover? I really like him.
My dad also has a Discus/Black Angel tank. Should I move him over there? The water temps on that tank are much warmer. Suggestions?

when you say dragonfish, do you mean this thing?

Yes I do mean that thing up there.....I just read that it is also known as a dragon goby and it lives in brackish waters. So why did my lfs have it in freshwater with predatory fish!? Is it doomed?

I want to move the dragon goby to the other tank if it will save him and not kill my Dads huge discus that are probably very hard to replace. I don't want the discus with those other meanies......7 dollar fish chewing on 100 dollar fish is no bueno.

LFSes will say anything to make a quick easy buck. "Whoa 'dragonfish!'; look at those ferocious bastards, i bet they rock, ill get one"

its a filter feeder, it feeds in the wild by gulping sand and sifting it thru its gills, which trap invertebrates and other small things. and yeah it does best in brackish water.

people have had some measure of success in keeping them in freshwater setups for some time, but these fish do not turn out to be the healthiest in such a setup. they can eat more conventional foods in the aquarium, but are near-blind and thus have some minor trouble feeding if the food is not right in front of them.

anyway, yeah it would do better in the discus tank than where it currently is, as it certainly won't defend itself against mean fish.

it won't harm your discus, either.

good to know.....I gotta stop trusting those lfs bastards! Thats how I ended up with a pacu, whose body alone was the size of a dinner plate, in my 55 gallon.

I forgot about the 20 gallon I had set-up originally for cichlids, cause I was gonna get a bichir for the 55, but fish r us didn't have any.......so the dragon is all alone in the 20 gallon with no one to bite him. I hope he does well......the water was a bit cooler in there. Crossing my fingers and hoping he isn't floating when I wake up. Lesson learned....do your homework and don't trust the LFS guy. I know more than him. :shakehead
