What cichlids and other fish should I put in a new 38 gal tank? I am looking for suggestions and I am really excited!

Thanks,
D

Hey D, I would put a nice cleaner fish in your tank. Like a GoldNugget Pleco or a Zebra Pleco. I really like alot of color in my Plecos and it sounds like your Tank is going to be Really Cool. Good Luck Man and Rock-On!!:clap :headbang2 :headbang2 :headbang2

I wouldn't put a gold nugget or zebra pleco in a 38 gallon with cichlids unless the cichlids were passive dwarves that would leave them alone and not steal all the food.

dmarinko, any idea what kinds of cichlids you're interested in? there are a lot of cichlids you could keep in that size tank from africans such as Malawi mbuna, tanganyikans etc, south americans like rams, appistos or some smaller gymnogeophagus species or there are also central americans like convicts, tbars, jade eyes, firemouths or any of their cousins. you could also do west africans like jewels or kribs. so, there are a ton of options available to you. I think the first thing you should do is check out some of the ones I recommended and see if any of them interest you and then we can help you plan around the cichlids you decide on.

A 38gal is definitely too small for any Malawi mbuna or haps/peacocks. Not a good suggestion.

Jason, Good Point.:) I should have know what fish he was going to be putting in first at the "Prime" fish. Then pick the other cleaning/lower fish next. Thanks and Cool.:grinyes: :clap

granted I'm not nearly as read up on malawi fish as I am on central and south americans, but I don't see a problem with a small group of yellow labs in a 38 gallon. that would be dependant on the dimensions of the tank though. I'm thinking of a 38 gallon being 36" x 12" x 18" or something like that. if that is the case then I don't see why a male and several female yellow labs couldn't be kept in there. :)

dmarinko, what are the exact dimensions of the tank? as for jack dempseys, they will grow too large for a 38 imo so you really ought to look for something that will stay a bit smaller. personally I think a pair of tbars (C. sajica) and some dithers would make for a great tank. :)
