I am just starting a 30 gal. cichlid tank. I have two Alunacara something or others (eureka red). I am a beginner and the fish have been in the tank about two weeks and seem happy (water is starting to balance out). the fish i have are juviniles. Any advise on new tank mates?

Since you already have aulonocara or peacock cichids I would just stay with them. Do not ad any Mbuna to that tank as they will beat up your peacocks, and haps will get to big. You can get haps only if you plan on upgrading to a bigger tank in the future.

You sould probably only add 1 maybe to more fish to that tank. 30gl's is pretty small and most pecocks get to around 5in. The fish you add try and make sure you get a type that has a different color than the ones you already have or just try and get females or males of the same type of fish you already have. Just try and keep one male to a tank though.

Welcome HATCH to the fantastic world of Malawi's. :welcome: :newbie: You could look at adding some of the quiter mbuna to your tank. Fish that come to mind are the Labidochromis caeruleus. This fish will add a great yellow splash to your tank. If you are able to get a hold of some Melanonchromis cyaneorhabdos"maingano" that will add some brilliant blue colour to the tank. Pseudotropheus crabro is another of the quiter mbuna. Placidochromis sp "johnstoni solo" is a Haplochromis group you can add if you can find it. This is quite an amazing fish. I will try and see if I have a pic to post otherwise I will try and get a good shot of the male I have. This fish was given to my son as an X-mas present and it has turned out to be the fish in the tank.
I would suggest you give them a sandy bottom and you will need quite a number of rocks to create caves. Try to do a 20% water change on a weekly basis as these fish thrive in clean water. I have just had two fish start to carry in the last two days. Have not started with Aulonocara species yet but this will come. If you can get an Aul korneliae you should look at buying them as they are quite something once settled and sarting to show colour.
Good luck with your adventure. You must post some pic's once your tank is settled. :naughty: :woot: :clap :clap :headbang2
