New CITES additions

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The zebra pleco being added has already been posted about in a thread.

Lol,and that's okay....no one's gonna penalize ya for it.

Im still seeing tons of Zebra plecos here for sale, although not sure if CB or WC???

CITES is world wide, it also covers things like Ivory.

Yes some places will break the law and sell them, with things like the zebra Pleco please dont buy them, no demand = no collection.

I am aware some people might react very very badly to that, so if anyone is about to reach for the keyboard please read this first.

http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/izy.12000/full

I admit the link just shows the abstract, but inside the paper it talks about the Zebra Pleco and it teetering on the brink of extinction (amongst others). Anyone with Journal access or 'other' methods can get the full paper by using the following ref number (citation mark) 10.1111/izy.12000

I havnt checked google scholar but there is a slim chance you can find the paper for free on there. It isnt a open access paper, so i cant legally post a link directly to the paper, however i can distribute a limited number of full papers, under the dissemination of knowledge agreement with publishers etc. So for a few people if they pm me and want the full paper i gave supply a temp link to it.

if they wish to distribute 2-3 copies they may do so under the same terms ;). I havnt seen the new list in full yet, i have asked at work for information and will post what i find out, i am surprised at some of the fish on the list though. Anyway the first 2-3 people who want a full copy can pm me.

That was quick!!

I have been passed some info, you can relax a little it isnt banned! it has been placed in Annex 3 as endangered or at risk, apparently this is due to a Dam that has been built, this has destroyed vast areas of habitat and decreased the numbers significantly.

The Dam is the Belo Monte dam in Brazil, the actual meaning of classification is as follows.

"An Appendix III listing mandates that international trade in the species be documented, and establishes paper-trail regulations for exporters and importers that must be adhered to. Appendix III listings do not ban trade, nor do they affect interstate trade within a country. Based on current CITES information, these species will require either an export permit from the listing state (in the case of H. zebra, from Brazil or any country where captive-bred), or if exported (or re-exported) from any other country, a certificate of origin is required."

Hope this clears it up.
