I am thinking about getting a snake or possibly a lizard for my classroom. I have owned an Iguana (a rescue that went from a sad, skinny little thing to a five-foot monster in a couple years) and currently own a Common Snapping Turtle, but I have never kept a snake.

I am getting a free snake cage (60"x26"x56") from the high school. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard it is "really nice". :D

What would you recommend?

I like Green Tree Boas and Horned Chameleons, but I really don't know what I want.

Requirements:

Not too labor intensive (the Iguana ate and defecated too much!)
Not terribly rare or expensive
Can live out its life in above-mentioned cage
Non-venemous (obviously) :screwy:
Doesn't need to be too easy to handle, it will not be held by the kids much, if at all

Thanks for your replies!

Most chameleons require screen cages and are high maintenence. Green tree boas are beautiful but are nippy at first so kids prob will not be able to hold them also they cost 300$. A brazilian rainbow boa may be good pretty nippy at first and is pretty cheap.

um honestly out of the two id be a boa not a chameleon since there arboreal which is more height than length..but boas or pythons would benefit just fine in that cage..best of luck

Thanks for the quick replies!

I was thinking that a Chameleon might be a bit too delicate/high maintenance. I have really liked them since childhood, but they probably are not what I'm looking for.

I will have to look into Brazilian Rainbow Boas. The Green Tree Boas are gorgeous. I had heard they are biters, but since this it will probably be just me handling it, that could be OK.

Any other suggestions? I am very open to ideas, what's out there?

A ball python would be a fantastic classroom pet. Easy to take care of (but can be picky eaters), docile, readily available. Your cage is way oversized for it- it won't use much of that vertical space- but that does give you an opportunity to decorate that space with epiphytes and such for more of a "slice of jungle" look than the typical barren snake cage.

No such thing as green tree boas. There are green tree pythons and emerald tree boas, not sure which one your referring too. Either way, they are going to cost you upwards of 250$, probably going to required a significant amount of care. Captive breed GTPs and ETBs are actually not very bad biters at all, but wild caught ones can be pretty nasty.
