^ If I had to guess, I would think it has something to do with thier color. Its probobly dark to soak up the Max amount of sun.
 
It's possible too that this species has antifreeze proteins in it's blood to cope with the swing in temperatures.

yeah I was thinking that may be, but for when it is still cold, but not cold enough to "shut down" dark coloration could work
