Ive learned a lot recently from research and from mfk, but I have one remaining question. When they spawn... where will the eggs be? Should I be looking for them on the top of rocks or will they put them under the rocks? I put big ones (larger than golfballs... maybe tennis ball size) in their tank for them to hide in and the fish are just over an inch long. Where will they hide their goodies??

My con breeder setups:
30g long
No substrate
82 degrees
Simple powerhead with sponge
25% water change every week

Heres how simple it was, my current pair spawned on the bottom of the tank...Take note that I have no substrate(gravel, sand, etc.) at all, just bare tank....My fry are 9 days healthy...Experience has showed me that cons will lay their eggs on any side of whatever object they choose...I have not experienced a pair tunnelling under a structure and then nesting, I do not think they get that complicated...Good Luck.....

I have terracotta pots and a terracotta looking antique jug,has cracks and a few holes in it, in my 20 gallon long with a pair of breeding convicts.

They seem to prefer the jug. They've spawned 2 times in 2 months, I keep the fry with them till they're big enough to feed to my Birchirs and Perches.

I think they prefer the jug because its a bit more hidden then the open faced pots.

wherever they feel most comfortable. digging pits are really good clues to look for.
if hidden away from you or tankmates, watch for the female to disappear for a day or two.
if they could care less, the female could probably choose anywhere in your tank.

With NO male my 4 inch female convict has dropped eggs 4 times since May. lol she laid them for the 5th time last weekend. Always laid them in a clay pot.

When the temp hits 80F and stays that way for a few days it will usually put her in the mood.

A few ways to tell if she's 'in the mood'.
She will chase any fish from where she intends to lay her eggs.
She will clean the area flat(When i've done wc i usually put some substrate in the pot).
Her colors really come out, mostly blue on the fins for mine.

I've had convicts lay eggs on the tank sides, on the outside and inside of terracotta pots, on the sides of rocks, pretty much everywhere.

I have 3 pair of pink cons in a 55. Now have 3 set of fry up to 1/4". One pair likes to clean off under gravel filter. Last time I broke down the tank found 29 living there. They are good source of food for others.
