Couldn't pass up 2 baby pikes at a LFS today for $4.99 each. They are in the johanna complex - white with black mid-lines. (The main difference here is that their overall body color is a washed out silvery gray, instead of the crisp white.) They are only about 1 1/2 inches in length. They remind me a lot of my old school of ten johanna of many years ago.
Until I get a digital camera, no pics.

So Peanut, I'm afraid I've joined the Pike club again.

Congrats on the new pikeup! :headbang2

Thanks!!!

What are you afraid about? LoL!! Gimpy!! Pikes ROCK! They sound more like sp. 'venezuela' though, but at such incredibly small sizes, who knows!! LoL!! Keep a close eye on them, cuz at those sizes they are more sensative...oy!!

Thanks for the heads up - you don't happen to have baby pics of sp. Venezuela do you?

WOW - you just answered more than you thought!

What I had in the past was a shoal of sp. venezuela, and these two seem to be Johanna. I had them backwards ! Having seen them, I spotted it right away.

So, tell me, how rare are real johanna?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh man, thankz!! I needed that laugh fo shore!! ;) I really don't know of any nonreal johanna.... . If you've got johanna, its johanna. They are rather difficult to mix up with any other pike species because of the lack of the humeral blotch at the base of the caudual fin...;). So there is seldom any confusion when it comes to gettin johanna.

Well, the price tag should give you some indication about their rarity. They are pretty common pikes, and one of the few Lugubris pikes that have been bred in captivity. They are highly underrated though, as adults are quite stunnin fish. Not many people keep them till they are adults though, so thats part of the problem. So to answer your question, the really aren't that rare, but are quite desirable none the less! GREAT PIKE UP! :D

The reason we say TRUE or REAL is because some species are labeled as the same thing, and really aren't. Like Crenicichla strigata for instance. Many pikes are labeled as strigata...most of which aren't. Crenicichla sp. 'venezuela' for one, is often labeled as strigata, when it definately isn't. Which is why we say TRUE Crenicichla strigata, which means that you have gotten the real deal and not some other species...comprende?

comprende. ;)
