so i got another yoy cuban at around 6", it has pretty bad gill curl, whereby the gill is curling inwards toward the fish. just wondering if a) there's a possibility it will recover, b) there's anything i can do to help it and c) this compromises the fishes health.

on a side note, the fish currently has lymphocytis.

a) most likely no (for every fish, not just gar!)
b) take good care of it, keep the water clean because dirty water can affect the open gill.
c) most fish still live normal as I see!

hey xander,

it likely won't heal normally - i have a CBG from our 1st group that has a similar condition and it has done just fine, but the operculum is still deformed. gar itself acts just like any other CBG, so yours should be fine. keep us posted, and hope that info helps--

just give him to me :D

lol how much would that be ? XD hahaha lol

I've never seen gill curl like that.. usually it's under the gill... and kinda curls inwards.. not the opposite exposing the gills themselves.. weird.. Usually it's caused in big cats by ammonia poisoning or possibly lack of o2 in the water or thats the theory.. though I def woudln't rule out genetics since both species of fish are farm bred. This is something I would def talk to some people with the catfish that know their business if it's reversable of fixable. I would prolly start with Wet Whiskers, she keeps a bunch of big cats last I knew and if she doesn't know would know who to point you too. I'de prolly get their take and cross-ref it w/ Sol and richard. or at leats thats what I would do. lol.

i don't have much more to add than what i posted earlier...seems to be more of a farm-raised fish issue here as i have seen it in a couple fish from a group over ~50. fish with the condition are doing fine and exhibit no problems compared to the other gars - for now i would not be concerned and just treat it like any other gar (obviously let us know if anything changes/seems unusual) --
