So one of my students calls me over to tell me that he thinks the JD's have had babies. Indeed they have and lots of them. They're in a cove of driftwood being vigorously defended by their parents. Good thing too because I'm sure the bichirs, ropefish, and firemouths would love to eat them. Any insightful words of advice?

congrats

Cover up your filter intake with some filter pad or thin screen. The fry will all get sucked up if you don't. I'd remove all the other fish if you want a high survival rate, but you don't have too.

i'd remove the filter and set up a sponge filter and set up a new tank for the other fish but make sure you jumpstart the cycle in the new tank with the establised water!! o and congratz what size tank are they in?

ya get the other fish out of there

Congrats.... If you can move them great, otherwise, it will be a very good for your students to watch how cichlid parents act. More teachers should have animals and fish in their classrooms for interaction w/the kids. Personally I always did good in classes that had something else other than a chalkboard to keep me intune. I'll have one of my students cover the intake today. The babies are sheltered under an island of driftwood in the slowest corner of my 300 gallon tank. The parents have been chasing the bichirs whenever they wander by. So far all the other fish hang out in the opposite half of the tank from the JDs. We've been talking about phenotypic plasticity in fish during my biology class. Having the big tanks and the ability to observe fish behavior has really been a hook for many of my students. I don't know of too many schools that have a 300 gallon acrylic tank in the middle of their biology class. DJ

The last time we had a class pet was in 1st grade. Who put it there?
