hello, today i purchased 2 discus fish and a black knife fish which i have in a 40 gallon tank

the discus are really timid and they have been hiding all day even tho the lights have been off.

what I'm concerned about is that i throw frozen brine shrimp in there and none of the fishes touch it. they're all hiding so i don't want them to starve...what should i do?

also another thing is that i know discus fish are schooling fish and the 2 fish are not together at all, as a matter of fact they're one opposite end from another.. why is that? do i need more discus or what is the problem.

o not sure they are good combo together, what are your temps? discus shold be in the 80's.
o what are your water test results?
o did you cycle properly?

o they are normally skittish espec. in new tank after transporting.

o starve them for 2-3days. when I got my discus juvies they didn't eat for 5days! but their "hunger strike" couldn't last forever, now they eat like pigs!

o should have done some research & ask the forum for feedback. many suggest you start with a min. of 4, better 5 or 6. 2 not enough to go to "school"

o even at 4 they may not school depending on size of tank - if there is a lot of room they won't stay together, each will try to find their "safe" haven. any decor/plants sponge filter to hide behind?

The tank is too small to properly keep discus and its FAR too small for a black ghost knifefish. Discus are a grouping fish and you will see them more if you have atleast 4, well bred discus. Dont go for the cheapest discus in the shop. Choose the most healthy and actuve ones. Ask the lfs people to feed the discus so you can see which are feeding well.

ok thank you, and yes i know the tank is way to small for the black knife. i have a 300 gallon in waiting to be setup so its only temperarly and hes only about 4 inches long.

i will buy 2 more discus when i can but they're really expensive.. over 120 for 2? >.< i don't have that kinda money but ill try and make it happen haha

may be worth buying from reputable onliner (see www.simplydiscus.com) & pay the same price incl. shipping, I heard one in SD is very good.

You can't just throw a couple of discus into a tank and expect them to act normal. It sometimes takes several days, up to a week in some cases for discus to adjust to a different tank and water conditions. Give it time. Also, $120 for 2 juvie discus is a rip off unless it is a rare strain. And finally, yes you need more discus.
