I don't know why the stress bars are so pronounced in the pictures as they are very vague in person. They were eating within minutes of introduction and are almost always at the front glass begging for food.

The bars are really bold on that one in the second photo.

Well I've come to the conclusion that they are stunted. Are there any ways to un-stunt them? I can't return them because of the distance to the store. Should I post than for sale and take a loss? Anyone got any ideas/suggestions?

they do look a little stunted but who said they won't grow a little more for you? As long as they are eating and active they should be fine. The stress bars could be from the move... with in time they will lighten up once they get acclimated to the new surroundings!
Which store did you get them from?

If they are your first Discus, I'd hang on to them for the experience. Stunted or not, they're prone to sickness. Imo, getting down diagnosing and treating is the hard part, getting them big comes next.
The stress bars on my fish come and go, sometimes something like an aggressive tank mate, or the move like whale said makes them stress for a short time. I don't worry about stress bars unless they're constant. If you decide to keep them, I'd consider adding at least a couple more, from the same source. 4 may not be enough to give the weak one enough of a chance.

Thanks for the reassurance about the bars. I got them from sea level.

Same source is probably out for now. The bars are only showing half the time and are usually pretty vauge.

Never dealt with sea level... Since you have them now take it for a ride and learn from them. like FMA mentioned they would be better in a group of 6 but hey work with what you have now. Keep up on diet and pristine water conditions and you should have a healthy group and watch them grow a little more!

Well Now that I've had them roughly a month here's an update. I had a group of 12 cardinal tetras and 12 runny nose tetras come out of quarantine yesterday and are in the tank swimming around. The discus did manage to eat one upon acclimation but the rest are semi loosely school in the top portion of the tank. The discus are seem less football shaped on 50% daily water changes and are being feed a variety of frozen foods.

Sea level is easily one of the best lfs's I've worked with to the point of offering to exchange an undrilled tank for a drilled tank even though I didn't purchase it there. He also gave a me free food and a discount for just buying the fish.
