Wasn't entirely sure how this would work out, but I decided to just go for it...

GE silicone 1 for the glass-glass connection, DAP 3.0 for glass-aluminum. I've built all glass tanks w/ ge 1 so I'm not worried about that. Never used aluminum or DAP 3.0 before. Would've done more research in my younger days, but as I said, just decided to go for it. If it fails I can add a 1/4" piece to the top and rip the aluminum off the bottom.

Thanks Zoea, Both were interesting reads. In all honesty I didn't have a specific intent to use aluminum, but I was at home depot last night 10 min before closing and it was the perfect size I needed. In the past I've had success patching tanks w 3,4" plywood coated in drylock. Even built an entire 180g out of it once. This build was mostly spur of the moment because I noticed problems w my 135g that will require me to tear down that tank. I debated on using hydroloc cement in between the glass walls, but wasn't sure how well silicone would adhere. Expansion of different materials due to temperature swing is also a concern. In any case, we'll see how this particular experiment turns out. I still have 30+ pieces of glass to experiment with going forward. Stay tuned...

I've been there. I cant tell you how many times i've walked into a hardware store for one thing and walked out with a new DIY project. Definitely look forward to seeing how this one turns out. Thanks for sharing

PS- Another possibility could be a stone or slate bottom like they used in the old days. I often get free granite and rock scraps from local headstone and memorial engravers, I doubt theyd have a piece as large as youre looking for but you never know you might get lucky.

I've seen pieces of granite on Craigslist, but they're mostly cost prohibitive. I'm certain I have some max acr floating around somewhere, bit I haven't looked into how it adheres to aluminum. I'll probably wait another 24hrs before test filling. I'll post results after. Thanks again for input.

Built the stand today when I got off of work. May still add a few supports, but it was mostly left over material. Top of the stand is 3/4" plywood, very flat, no noticeable deflection. Christmas gift from work was a notification that I was getting the boot. Today was actually my last day.

Anywhoo, I'm not even sure the stand will fit through our door. Might have to partially disassemble to move it, but obviously I wanted to test fill outside. My girlfriend was definitely convinced that she would drop her end and an instant relationship ender would occur. Gotta love the woman for letting me build a new tank after sooooo many years....

If I manage to avoid catastrophic failure and subsequent wrath of the better half, I'm thinking about other projects. A bigger 6x3 footprint would be neat, but I would have to check my larger pieces of glass to see if I have one that'll work for the bottom. I also think I'll try a tall skinny tank 16" square footprint & 3'High. This I think I would do on a large piece of tile. The thing is I mostly keep larger cichlids so I wouldn't really have a use for a tank like that and I'm not sure it would appeal to anyone on craigslist, Thoughts???

I posed the idea of making the tall narrow tank and inserting it in the center of this current tank and doing a cool tank within a tank/overflow deal, but the girlfriend shot it down and I figured its best not to push my luck right now.

Thanks for reading and yes the stand will be finished off nicely once i'm certain there are no leaks to worry about.
