  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
thats the way you have to do it... you need lots of time and patience ... must be beautiful

I think trying to make driftwood out of live, or newly dead, wood is problamatic regadless of tree species. I just don't think you can boil out the saps and resins that all tree's have to some degree and it's got to mess with watch chemestry. I don't know that anything will rid a piece of wood of it's saps and resins but weathering and time.

that is a very cool info Liz .. thanks so much i ll start looking again 2moro for dead branches with good looking ..

Yes I mad my own driftwood for my pleco tank. I went out looking for some wood at a local lake. I found a real cool looking piece and started getting it ready and after backing it I found out that it was a piece of pine, as some sap started to ooze out, and it smelled like pine. This piece of wood I bet was in the sun and water for a very very long time. But like I said it was pine and was still leaking sap so back to the lake to find more wood. after a few hours of searching I found what I think were the perfect pieces of wood for my tank.

I scrubbed, presure washed, wire brushed,, baked and soaked the wood over a 3 weeks. I put it in my tank a few days ago and it looks great, and my plecos love it. I find 3 or 4 plecos on the wood at any given time.
here are a few picts

i went 2day to get a balance recharging for my mobile and so while i am walking i saw a piece ( couldn't resist ) so i picked it up and i ll start the treating stage and so .. and i guess it is for that kind of small trees that used in fencing gardens ( as we have a lot of green areas here so there is alot of that small trees ) were cut and died

so .. ??

i quess as long as it is hard wood.. is there any way you can check what kind of trees they are to make sure...

My 2 cents on old pine..... I have torn down a 100 year old house that had never had the pine sidding painted. Sun baked and dried to the max. I cut the wood up to male it easer to haul off. After cutting it you could clearly see and feel the saps and resins in the center. The pine/turpentine smell was much stronger in the old wood than in new wood. I think the advice that you have gotten on here is right on! Good luck & have a great day!!
