New drift wood help

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Thats a good looking piece of wood ! I cant tell the size from the picture but you can boil it in salt for a couple of hours although i would say since it was bought from a LFS the people they use to get driftwood will have probably cleaned most of it for you. For peace of mind i would still boil it and use a stiff brush to get any excess gunk off.

No worries, if im honest i boil mine for an hour in salt and then throw it in the dishwasher with salt in where the soap would usually go. Obviously i only do that when the wife isnt home ;-) but it comes out sparkling !

I bought 3 DW and just rinsed it off in a bucket and it clouded my tank a bunch. I then took it out put it in a cooler ( nothing else big enough ) and boiled some water. I used four pots at a time and filled the cooler until the DW was covered completely. Then let it sit with the top covered for an hour or two. I did this 3 times. Then put it back in within the next couple of days did another water change and it was back to crystal clear.

If you dont mind tannins you can soak for a few days and put it in your tank, otherwise soak for around two weeks changing water daily

I agree with Fat Homer, You can soak driftwood in a vat or bucket of water for about 1 to 2 weeks while changing the water daily. This will remove most of the residual cloudy/brown water. Once in tank, water should be fine. Regular water changes are still necessary and will help keep water clear and clean.

I have lots of driftwood in both my tanks.

Everytime I simply boiled the piece for 15 min, then I take it out and let it sit for a day. The water in the pot is always dark brown at the end. I've never had a problem doing this.
